The GameCamp Berlin (#gcberlin) is the annual meet-up of game experts in Germany’s "Games Capital", Berlin.
The GameCamp Berlin, originally known under the label "researching games BarCamp", was founded as a networking meeting for the scientific research of digital games and was aimed primarily at young scientists. Since the kick-off in Wiesbaden in 2011, it has succeeded in encouraging researchers in a wide range of disciplines (computer science, media studies, education, engineering, literature, psychology, business administration, medicine, sociology, mathematics, law, religious studies etc.) to get in touch and also to develop an active and interdisciplinary dialogue. By 2012 and 2013, BarCamp was firmly planted in the academic community: a total of 250 participants from more than 20 cities and 4 European countries joined in. In 2016, the BarCamp finally moved to Berlin and took place until 2017 as official partner of the International Games Week Berlin.
With the aim to initiate and promote a sustainable exchange between research and practice, the newly-aligned GameCamp Berlin 2018 focuses on inviting practitioners from the games industry who would like to share their knowledge and start a conversation with researchers. Artists from other disciplines who are interested in digital games and game culture, as well as other enthusiasts are all very welcome to exchange thoughts and ideas.
This exchange is promoted by the BarCamp format: a BarCamp is an open meeting where all participants can and should give a presentation in English or German. The precise timetable of the event will be collectively decided on site. As per usual with BarCamps, the event is mainly financed by sponsoring, which is why the participation fee (including food and lodging) can be kept very low. The GameCamp Berlin 2018 is funded in part by the "Projekt Zukunft" of the Berlin Senate and Stiftung Digitale Spielkultur.
The GameCamp Berlin 2018 is organized by GameCamp Berlin GbR (Florian Berger, Annegret Montag, Christian Roth and Felix Schröter with the support of Melanie Fritsch). It takes place on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2018 in the Youth Hostel Berlin Ostkreuz. The participation fee is 35 €.
